THE NELSON MUSEUM OF THE WEST
THE FACILITY
Located at 1714 Carey Avenue in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the 18,000 square foot building was originally constructed for use as a women's fine clothing and fur store. The Building has been totally remodeled as a Museum and is fully handicapped accessible. A climate controlled 2,500 square foot vault is home to that part of the Museum's collection that is not on display.
THE FOUNDER
ROBERT L. NELSON - Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1941, Mr. Nelson has been and continues to be a collector of all things western and military. He has between 12 - 15,000 items in the Museum.
Mr. Nelson's grandparents were homesteaders west of Newcastle, Wyoming and his mother was raised on a Wyoming ranch.
Mr. Nelson practiced law in Cheyenne for 26 years before retiring in 1993 to spend more time with his other business interests and building this museum.
A Wyoming big game hunter since the age of 14, Mr. Nelson began serious worldwide hunting in 1981. Since then he has hunted on every continent and has hunted in Africa ten times.
He is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of the world's wildlife resources and to the support of our military personnel. THE COLLECTIONS
The Nelson Museum shows major collections of cowboy and Native American collectibles, fine art, taxidermy and collectible books.
For the past several years, the Museum collection has built the Military Memorial Museum collection, which specializes in the uniforms, saddles and weapons of the U.S. Cavalry and the uniforms of Army and Air Force General Officers.
THE DREAM CATCHER FUND
The Dream Catcher Fund of the Nelson Museum of the West was created to preserve and promote our Western Heritage and to support humanitarian efforts.
The Dream Catcher Fund is the charitable arm of the Museum. It was established in 2003 to provide emergency assistance funds to families and neighbors in need in the spirit of the Old West.
